Wreaths Across America collections begin this month in Darien
The Wreaths Across America 2018 ceremony will be held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 15, in Darien’s Spring Grove Veterans’ Cemetery. Members of Darien’s Monuments and Ceremonies Commission will join with Darien’s VFW Post #6933 and members of Darien’s Good Wife’s River Chapter DAR to kick off the 2018 WAA collection at Darien Doughnuts on Heights Road on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. DAR member Carol Wilder Tamme, VFW member, Allan Bixler and Monuments & Ceremonies Commission members Sharon Bixler and Karen Polett will be on hand to collect donations. Last year, wreaths covered all 2,184 graves in the veterans section at Spring Grove. The public is encouraged to purchase wreath sponsorships and to attend this ceremony to help with the wreath placement.
Although not an officially sanctioned Darien M&C town event, David Polett has agreed to take over the duties of site and location coordinator for Wreaths Across America 2018.
Wreaths at $15. each can also be ordered directly from Wreaths Across America, with the Group ID Code of CT 0007 and the Location Code of CTSGVD noted on the check/order form so that wreaths arrive at the Darien location. The mailing address is WAA, PO Box 249 Columbia Falls, Maine 04623. Wreaths can also be ordered at the WAA website: wreathsacrossamerica.org. WAA is a non-profit (501) (3) founded to expand the annual wreath laying at Arlington Cemetery. In addition to Arlington, wreaths are placed on the headstones of fallen veterans at more than 800 locations throughout the country.
