UPDATE: Darien Schools Finance Director Mike Feeney resigns to take position at United Nations School

UPDATE THURSDAY 10:30 — Darien's Board of Ed Finance Director Michael Feeney will be taking a similar position at the United Nations School following his last day in Darien, July 8, confirmed Interim Schools Superintended Elliot Landon. Feeney was recruited for the position, Landon said.

Feeney will join former Darien Schools Superintendent Dan Brenner, who resigned his position just over a year ago in May 2018 to take the position of  the next executive director of the United Nations International School.  Brenner took the helm of the New York City-based school in August.

A Pre-K-to-12th grade, coeducational, college-preparatory day school, the United Nations International School was established in 1947 by a group of United Nations parents to provide an international education for their children, while preserving their diverse cultural heritages. What began as a nursery school for 20 children quickly grew, adding grades, students and faculty.

Today, UNIS has over 1,600 students in two locations, serving the United Nations, international and New York communities. The campus in Jamaica Estates, Queens is a K-8 school and our Manhattan campus, overlooking the East River, is Pre-K-12.

WEDNESDAY 4:30 p.m. — Darien's Board of Education Finance Director Michael Feeney has resigned as per interim Schools Superintendent Elliott Landon.

Landon's email said "Mike Feeney, Director of Finance & Operations, Darien Public Schools,  will be heading for a new job opportunity.  His resignation is effective July 8, 2019. The Human Resources Department has begun the search for a successor."

Feeney replaced former Schools Finance Director Richard Huot who retired early in 2013 before the appointment of  Feeney in July 2013, in the wake of the Darien Schools' crisis over special education compliance.

He previously served as the chief operating officer for the Stratford Public Schools, a position he held since 2010. Feeney also worked for the City of Bridgeport as chief administrative officer and chief financial officer. Among his responsibilities were managing the city’s operating budget and pension fund, developing capital improvement plans and negotiating labor contracts with thirteen municipal bargaining units. Prior to his work in Bridgeport, Mr. Feeney worked as a town administrator in Stratford, Conn. and Milton, New Hampshire.

Interim Schools Superintendent Elliot Landon will also depart the district for the permanent hire of Dr. Alan Addley, Granby Schools superintendent,  appointed as Darien’s next Superintendent of Schools in April, commencing this July.
