Parks & Rec offers beach permits, spring programs for youth, adults and families in Darien
The Darien Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for the residents of Darien. Registration for programs takes place online at www.darienct.gov/parkrec, at the Parks and Recreation office located in Town Hall, or through the mail. Beach permits on sale
The Darien Parks and Recreation Department is currently selling 2017 park permits and boat launch stickers. These permit stickers allow entrance into Weed and Pear Tree Point Beaches and are available to Darien residents and taxpayers. Stickers may be purchased online at www.darienct.gov/parkrec or at the Darien Town Hall, Room 110. 2016 permits are valid through Wednesday, May 31.
Beach security guards will be on duty starting Monday, April 17 at Weed Beach and Friday, May 26 at Pear Tree Point Beach. A valid permit is required for entrance to the beaches starting on these dates. For more information, please call Parks and Recreation at 203-656-7325.
Spring youth programs
April vacation camp: Looking for something fun to do over April vacation break? The Parks & Recreation Department will be offering a Future Stars Basketball and Blue Wave Kickers Soccer camp from Monday, April 10 to Thursday, April 13. This basketball and soccer camp is for children in grades K to 6 and will meet at the Town Hall gymnasium and fields. Participants can choose from the basketball & soccer camp from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for $250, the basketball camp from 9 AM - Noon for $135, or the soccer camp from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. for $135. A daily rate is also available for $60.
Big swing wiffle ball: This program, run by Overtime Athletics, is wiffle ball with an attitude! Everyone hits and not one strikes out in this version of America’s favorite pastime. Classes for boys and girls ages 5 to 10 will be held Thursdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. starting April 20 and will run through June 8. Program will meet on the Town Hall fields. Fee is $125/Darien resident; $150/non-resident.
Future Stars Basketball: Darien Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce that Future Stars Basketball Academy will be offering an instructional program for boys and girls ages 5 to 10 this spring on Saturday mornings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium. This program will meet for eight weeks starting April 8. The program fee is $175 for Darien residents; $210 for non-residents. This program will include Future Stars' Lessons of Life Program (sportsmanship, teamwork, doing well in school, respecting your parents, etc.).
Youth golf lessons: Clinics are held at Oak Hills Golf Course on Fillow Street in Norwalk (just over the Darien line). These clinics are designed to introduce junior golfers to the game of golf using the correct fundamentals and cover putting, chipping, pitching, bunker play and the full swing. The rules of golf and etiquette will be discussed as well. Juniors (ages 8 to 14) of all abilities are welcome.
These lessons are taught by PGA Certified Professional Paul Alexander and will meet Wednesday afternoons from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. or Saturday afternoons from 3 to 4 p.m. for five weeks starting April 19. Program fee is $150/Darien resident; $180/non-resident.
Playground boot camp: The playground boot camp program by Bodywise By Betty, was carefully designed to enhance the overall development and physical fitness of children through six essential physical elements of play. The goal is to improve overall agility, quickness, stamina, strength and core all in a playful, fun and enjoyable way. This program, for boys & girls ages 6 to 12, will meet Friday afternoons at Weed Beach from 4:15 to 5 p.m. for six weeks starting April 21. Program fee is $99/Darien resident; $119/non-resident.
Girls boot camp: Girls only class will include rebounding (trampoline), boot camp, jump rope sports, kickboxing, fitness hooping flexibility training and other fitness techniques for a fun, never boring fitness program that is sure to please your Pre-Teen and teen girls. Nutrition and healthy lifestyle education also included. This program, for girls ages 8 to 13, will meet Friday afternoons at Weed Beach from 5:15 to 6 p.m. for six weeks starting April 21. Program fee is $99/Darien resident; $119/non-resident.
Lego green engineering: This program uses Lego Renewable Energy Lab kits and is designed to help students grasp the abstract and sometimes difficult concept of energy through captivating and hands-on activities. Building projects such as turbine windmill, solar car and more will bring these science concepts alive! Classes for children in grades 2 to 4 meet for four Mondays starting May 1 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Darien Town Hall. Program fee is $120/Darien resident; $144/non-resident.
Girls yoga: Yoga is an excellent foundation for everything in life. It enhances sports training and dance; it increases strength and flexibility as well as increases attentiveness and awareness. Your child will also learn to cherish the art of meditation and will relish in the relaxation component that is present in each and every class. Our children's classes incorporate child friendly yoga asana, themes, storytelling, games, music, aromatherapy, and more! Classes will meet on Tuesdays for six weeks starting April 18 at the Mather Center. Ages 11 to 14 will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. while ages 7 to 10 will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Program fee is $105/Darien resident; $126/non-resident.
HIIT 2B Fit: Try this High Intensity Interval Training class! Get ready to push yourself to your limit for short bursts of time and focus on total body toning during recovery periods. H.I.I.T training burns significantly more calories than a traditional steady pace workout of the same duration - even when class is over! Take your fitness to the next level while having a blast! Each small group interval class is focused on the entire body. We will incorporate basic body weight exercises as well as equipment to push you past your comfort zone to see real change. Core yoga: Core yoga combines a series of flowing postures designed for all-levels with rhythmic breathing for a full mind-body workout with emphasis on the core. Classes will take place on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. starting April 19 to June 7 in the Mather Center. Program fee is $155 for Darien residents; $186 for non-residents.
Dog obedience and socialization class: This course will focus on attention, some limited heeling, and sits/downs. Class will be fun and motivational with games and attention work to build a solid relationship with your dog. These classes are designed to be an introduction to obedience and socialization. Classes will be run by Rick Weatherstone from Tactical Response. All dogs should be at least 6 months old and must have all their vaccinations. Classes will meet on Saturdays for 5 weeks from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Cherry Lawn Park starting April 22. The fee for this program is $125/Darien resident; $150/non-resident. Pre-registration is required.
Safe boating classes: Professional Marine Education comes to Darien to offer this eight hour course that will meet the requirements to obtain a Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate and Personal Watercraft Operations. This class will meet on Tuesday, April 18 and Thursday, April 20 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Darien Town Hall. Participants must attend both dates and all hours to be considered for certification. The fee for this program is $90/Darien resident; $108/non-resident. Pre-registration is required.
