Letter: Finance board chairman's State of the Town comments 'inaccurate, offensive and divisive'
The following letter was sent to Board of Finance Chairman Jon Zagrodzky. It was reprinted here at the request of the authors.
To the Editor:
On behalf of the Darien Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC), we are sharing concerns from parents about comments made during your State of the Town address. We feel that many of your remarks were inaccurate, offensive and divisive. Please remember that you are not just talking about data points on a slide, you are talking about students – children. Children and families who are identifiable.
It is inappropriate to suggest reducing special education costs without recommendations for improved district inclusion and programming. As a community, we should look at options to create special education programming within our district, make classrooms more accessible and ensure our teachers are trained in best practices to teach all students.
We appreciate your dedication and commitment to our town. Our committee would like to meet with you to share the perspective of informed parents of children with disabilities. We look forward to working together for the benefit of our whole community.
