Letter: Blue Wave Booster Club thanks community for fall fundraising support
To the Editor:
The Blue Wave Booster Club would like to thank the Darien community for making our Harlem Wizards event on Nov. 18, at DHS a tremendous success. We were excited to see so many smiling faces of children and their parents from all five of our elementary schools and Middlesex Middle school enjoying the afternoon together.
The BWBC typically seeks donations via a mail campaign in late summer. Virtually all the money raised from our mailing helps the BWBC fulfill our directive of funding ‘wish list’ items for DHS sport teams and the band that are outside of the BOE budget. Last spring, we decided to host the Harlem Wizards to increase our fundraising efforts. We could never have succeeded without the assistance of Darien’s elementary and middle school teachers and Ox Ridge principal who donated their time to play against the Wizards.
We owe them much gratitude and would like to recognize our Blue Wave All Stars team: Ox Ridge — Luke Forshaw, Christina Ulreich, Lauren Battersby, Tori-Ann Rongoe, Sarah Sproch, Catherine Takovich, Barbara Kisken, Caitlin Hoffer, and JoAnn Middelstadt; Hindley — Markos Tsagas; Royle — Sarah Kinsley, Linda Dragotta and Matt Borsuk, Holmes —Dan Sheldon and Jaydell Roy; Tokeneke - Emily Dunne; Middlesex — James Conrad. Thank you for not only teaching our children but for enthusiastically participating in this community event.
Thanks go to the Authentic Athlete of Darien who gave us a discount on the game jerseys. Of course we cannot thank enough the Darien Police, Post 53 and the staff at DHS for making all the logistics run seamlessly. Also we would like to acknowledge Laurel Road Bank, which sponsored the halftime show. Many thanks to our volunteers — the DHS girls Varsity Basketball team and members of the boys’ Varsity Basketball team and to the DHS varsity boys’ basketball coach, Charoy Bentley, for coaching our Blue Wave All Stars. Lastly, thank you to the always-willing Mr. Anthony Sweeney for refereeing the game and emceeing the halftime show — well done!
Finally, thanks to those in the community that purchased tickets to the Wizards event and/or donated to the BWBC during the year enabling us to better support the Darien High School sports and spirit teams.
The energy and sense of community present at the Harlem Wizards event certainly made all of us on the BWBC board grateful for the wonderful and generous town of Darien that we live in. Many thanks to all who participated!
