The award-winning Darien High School jazz ensemble, under the direction of Jonathan Grauer, will play host to elite high school jazz ensembles from throughout the area at the 2018 Darien High School jazz jamboree festival on Friday, March 2 from 4:30 through 9:30 p.m.

After each of the 13 area high school jazz bands performs, eminent jazz adjudicators will conduct workshops and provide feedback to the students about their performances. To top off the event at 9:00 p.m., the Darien Jazz Ensemble will perform in collaboration with the festival judges.  Awards are given to the outstanding soloists from each group and then one band will be recognized as the Outstanding Performance Award. The outstanding soloist for this year’s festival will be the first recipient of the Gerry Mulligan Outstanding Soloist Award.  Gerry Mulligan was one of the most respected and accomplished jazz musicians, composers and baritone saxophonists of our time and was a long time Darien resident. Special guests at this year’s jazz festival will include Franca Mulligan and Sanford Josephson, noted author of the Gerry Mulligan biography, “Jeru’s Journey: The Life and Music of Gerry Mulligan,” and “Jazz Notes: Interviews Across Generations.”

This promises to be an extraordinary event for both high school jazz performance and jazz education.  Audience members are welcome to watch any of the performances throughout the afternoon and evening and are particularly encouraged to support our Darien Jazz Ensemble. Admission is only $5 per person and proceeds are used to support the event.  For more information, please contact the Darien Music Office at: 203-655-3981, ext: 2250.
