The Fourth of July town fireworks are a Darien custom. The event returned from a hiatus in 2011, (the construction of the current Darien High School building made fireworks impossible in 2002) and has since been revived by community volunteers. For two years, the Darien Firefighters Association managed the event as a fund-raiser before a different group of volunteers came forward.

Susan Marks, who has managed the event for three years, is co-event chair with Stacey Tie (in her second year of organizing). They will also welcome new co-chair Shannon Keefe in her first year, stepping in for Rachel Hennemuth. All volunteer event chairs organize the whole event, “from hiring the fireworks company, coordinating with the police, Board of Ed, fire department, fund raising support, publicity, entertainment, food trucks, and anything else,” Stacey Tie explains.

There will also continue to be special accommodations at the fireworks.

“We are excited to offer the Sensory Field again this year,” Tie said. The sensory field is designed for community members who may want a quieter experience. In her first year coordinating, Tie heard from several families that had wanted to attend the fireworks, but had family members who may not be prepared for the large crowds and loud noises that would be experienced for much of the event. The sensory area will be separated from the band and food vendors, though still within walking distance. The area will also have its own parking and exit.

Parking passes are on sale for $30 at the Town Hall from June 15 to June 30 between 8:30am and 4pm. A pass is required for parking at the high school and guarantees a space. Pedestrians are always welcome free of charge. About 300 parking passes will be available at Town Hall, and Darien residents may also park at McGuane Park and Middlesex Middle School and walk to the high school from those locations.
