Darien Farmer’s Market returns to Goodwives Shopping Center this week
Darien’s seasonal farmer’s market, an annual tradition, will return this Wednesday, June 6. Similar to past years, the Darien Farmer’s Market will be each Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Goodwives Shopping Center at 25 Old King’s Highway North.
The farmer's market will be selling herbs and flowers, fruits, vegetables, and meats from several local vendors and farms. The market will be open every Wednesday through November 21st from 11:00am to 4:00pm.
This year marks the 21st year the Darien Farmers Market will be open and it will feature a similar array of goods as past years. The organizer of the farmers marketis Judy Sedor from Newgate Farms out in Windsor. Sedor is excited about the event and Different farms come together across Connecticut and combine to hold what is a lively event for the community of Darien.
The location of the market will be in the parking lot at Goodwives Shopping Center. Sedor said, “We used to be behind CVS and were kind of hidden from town.” Since then they have moved to Goodwives and are on their 3rd year within the Shopping Center. Sedor also said, “It’s much more visible. People will fill up and see what is going on and they will grab whatever they can’t get in Stop and Shop.” The new location has made it much more convenient for locals to stop in and browse the many options.
Some of the other vendors at the event will be Smith’s Acres (Niantic), Gazy Brothers Farm (Oxford), Whistlestop Bakery (Ridgefield), Riverbank Farm (Roxbury), and several others located throughout Connecticut and New York.
As for advertising the market, Sedor said that Darien generally does a great job of supporting the market, saying, “The town does a great job of supporting us, but there is always room for improvement. We plan on utilizing social media this summer to connect to different groups of people and give the market more exposure.”
Over the years, the market has provided Darien residents with a weekly opportunity to purchase fresh produce and support local farms in the process. In its 21st year, the market looks to continue to be a community affair that gives locals the chance to do both of these activities.
The town offers thanks to Urstadt Biddle Properties for their ongoing support and allowing the market to continue at this wonderful, easily accessible location. The Farmer’s Market will be every Wednesday, rain or shine, from June 6 through Nov. 21, 2018.
