Barrett Bookstore brings back 'Ladies of Summer' to inspire summer reading

Barrett Bookstore’s Ladies of Summer will be held at Wee Burn Country Club, 141 Hollow Tree Ridge Road, Darien on Wednesday, June 21 at 6 p.m. It will feature three authors who have books coming out just in time for great summer reading.  “This is the third year we have organized this evening,” says Sheila Daley, owner of Barrett Bookstore. “It is a lot of fun to hear the authors discuss the backstory of their new novels. The evening begins with wine and hors d’oeuvres on the terrace and a chance to meet the authors, followed by the authors’ presentation and a joint Q&A.

In Jamie Brenner’s “The Forever Summer,” 28-year-old Marin Bishop is at the top of her game. But an office fling in a moment of weakness costs Marin her career, as well as her upcoming marriage. And, when Rachel shows up claiming to be her half-sister, her life further unravels. Seeking escape, she joins Rachel to meet the grandmother she never knew she had at the B&B she owns in Provincetown.  As the summer unfolds, it becomes clear that the truth of her half-sister is just the beginning of revelations that will change Marin's life forever.

Maile Meloy, author of “Do Not Become Alarmed” has created another story full of unexpected twists and turns. When Liv and Nora decide to take their husbands and children on a holiday cruise, everyone is thrilled. But when they all go ashore for an adventure in Central America, the vacation turns into a nightmare when the children go missing.

Jane Green, whose books are favorite summer fare, has a new novel, “The Sunshine Sisters,” that Jojo Moyes calls her “best yet.” Ronnie Sunshine left London for Hollywood to become a star of the silver screen. But at home, she was a narcissistic mother who cruelly alienated her three daughters. As each sister leaves home to forge her own life, bitter scars fester. Years pass, and when Ronnie becomes seriously ill, they reunite and discover compassion and the unbreakable bond of family.

Tickets are $27 and include a glass of wine, hors d’oeuvres and a 10%  discount on any books purchased at the event. They are available at by clicking on the event or by calling Barrett Bookstore at 203-655-2712.
