Boys track and field sets improves record, sets new ones

Darien moved to 3-1 on the season with wins over Westhill (99-51), Central (130-16) and Greenwich (129-17) on Saturday. Kevin Keller claimed three victories on the day -- 400 (51.7), long jump (21-1) and triple jump (43-2). Keller was also third in the 200 meters, finishing in 22.9 seconds.

Another reliable athlete, Stockton McMullin, cashed in as well, placing second in triple jump (41-2), long jump (20-8) and the 200 (22.8). McMullin was also third in the 100, crossing the finish line in 11.2 seconds. Jake McCauley won the 1,600 in 4:46 and placed won the 800 in 2:05.

John Conley was second in both races with identical times. Sean Gill tied for first in the 300 hurdles in 42.6 and was on the winning 4 x 400 team (3:43.2) with Brent Eppley, Stevenson Bone and Jack Bushell.

Bushell was also part of the winning 4 x 100 team with Matt Pik, Wes Blummer and Peter McDonough (46.0).

The Blue Wave got more help by way of Walker McKeoguh, who won the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 11 inches; Jared Murphy was second in the discus throw, measuring out his best heave at 101-11. Mike Lee was third in high jump at 5 feet, 6 inches, and Will DeRocco was third in pole vault with an even 9 feet leap.

The Blue Wave also got top honors in the 3,200 thanks to long-distance reliability Charlie Baird, who finished in 10:28.

It's been a busy season already for the team outside of the FCIAC events, too.

The 4 x 1,600 relay team of McCauley, Alex Reynoso, David Watson and John Conley placed 10th at the New York Relays. The team ran a time of 19:02.11, good enough to set the school record. Since cross country season began last fall, head coach Tyson Kaczmarek has season his athletes smash more than a dozen team records over the course of the three running seasons. The previous record was held by Felipe Couto, Mike May, Tom Carney and Chase Pizzonia. That quad finished in 19:09.7, and the record was set in 2003.

Also, at the Irv Black Invitational last week, the 4 x 100 team of McMullin, Keller, Bushell and Eppley placed second, finishing in 44.78.

Keller also picked up a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 200 (23.29) and triple jump (42-1). McMullin added a seventh-place finish in the 100 (11.63) and ninth place in the 200 (23.50). Sean Gill was eighth in the 400 hurdles (61.35). Eppley was 11th in the 100 (11.84), while Peter McDonough was 21st in the 400, crossing the line in 54.08.

Also, Charlie Baird placed 14th in the JV 1,600 in 4:58.52 and Michael Johnston was 16th in 4:59.87.
