The Darien Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for the residents of Darien. Registration for programs takes place online at www.darienct.gov/parkrec, at the Parks and Recreation office located in Town Hall or through the mail. WINTER 2016/2017 PROGRAMS

Youth Programs

Tiny Tots Soccer: Blue Wave Kickers’ Tiny Tots Soccer engages children in physical activity while developing their motor and basic soccer skills. Mommy/Daddy and Me classes are offered on Saturday mornings and classes for children ages 3-5 are offered Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The first winter session begins in late November/early December while session No. 2 starts in early February. Vist the Parks & Recreation website for a complete list of classes and fees.

Blue Wave Kickers Little Athletes: Blue Wave Kickers staff will engage your child in physical activity while developing motor skills and sports fundamentals. It will help your child build confidence and self-esteem by playing fun games built around sports such as soccer, basketball and t-ball. This program will run on Wednesdays from 1:30-2:15 p.m. and Thursdays from 1:15-2 p.m. for six weeks in the Town Hall gymnasium. The first session begins Nov. 30 while the second session starts Feb. 1. The fee for this program is $120 for Darien residents; $144 for non-residents.

Future Stars Basketball: Darien Parks and Recreation announces that Future Stars Basketball Academy will be offering an instructional program for boys and girls ages 5-10 this winter on Monday afternoons from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium. This program will meet for eight weeks starting Jan. 9. The program fee is $215 for Darien residents; $258 for non-residents. This program will include Future Stars' Lessons of Life Program (sportsmanship, teamwork, doing well in school, respecting your parents, etc.).

Junior Paddle Tennis Lessons: These clinics are an introduction to the game of paddle tennis at Weed Beach. Clinics will utilize fun drills and games to teach participants the rules and strategies of paddle tennis. Paddles will be provided, or participants may use their own. Clinics will run at Weed Beach for eight weeks on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons for ages 7-10 and 11-14 starting Jan. 11. The fee for these lessons is $215 for Darien residents/$258 for non-residents.

Pee-Wee Tennis: New Level Sports will be offering indoor pee-wee tennis lessons at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium starting in January. Lessons are held for children ages 3-5 on Monday or Thursday afternoons in 45-minute increments from 12:15-3:15 p.m. Program fee is $125 for Darien residents/$150 for non-residents. Guitar Lessons: Want to be the next American Idol? Now’s your chance to get a start. Learn chords, scales, theory and, best of all, learn to play your favorite songs. Classes meet each Wednesday in the Mather Center starting Jan. 11 through Mar. 1. Beginners meet from 4-5 or 5-6 p.m. while intermediates meet from 6-7 p.m. This program is for children ages 8-15. The fee for this program is $245 for Darien residents/$294 for non-residents.

Piano Lessons: This revolutionary piano program builds a musical foundation and creates a hobby that will last a lifetime. Classroom keyboards and all materials are included in the registration fee. Classes for beginning children ages six-and-up will be held from 4-5 p.m. This course meets for nine Tuesday afternoons starting Jan. 10 in the new Mather Center. Fee is $200 for Darien residents/$240 for non-residents.

Drum Lessons: Want to rock out on the drums? Now is your chance to get started. All the basics are covered to help you begin your drumming journey. Not only will you learn proper technique and how to read rhythmic notation but you will also learn how to play cool rock beats and fills. Students will rotate between playing drum pads, bongos, snare drum and drum set. Drum sticks and practice pads will be provided for all students. Classes meet Thursdays from Jan. 12-Mar. 9 in the new Mather Center. This program, for children ages 8-15, will focus on beginning drums and will meet from 4-5 p.m. and intermediate drummers will meet from 5-6 p.m. The fee for this program is $270 for Darien residents; $324 for non-residents.

Mad Science: This program will be held on Thursday afternoons this winter from Jan. 12-Mar. 9. Classes for ages 3-5 will meet from 1:45-2:30 p.m. in room 119 of the Darien Town Hall. Children will explore a different science experiment each week with topics including dinosaurs, butterflies and dry ice. Classes for ages 5-8 will meet from 4-5 PM in room 205 of the Mather Center. These STEM focused classes are sure to stimulate the senses with new experiments each week. The fee for this program is $180 for Darien residents; $215 for non-residents.

Cupcake Club: Do you love to bake? Then The Cupcake Club is for you. Join instructors from My Cupcake Party for a new class where every week we will create adorable seasonal themed cupcakes. We will cover basic frosting techniques to creating the perfect cupcake for winter and the holidays. This class will provide all cupcakes, decorations and supplies. Please note - this class contains allergens such as nuts, eggs, daily and gluten. The fee for this program is $130 for Darien residents; $156 for non-residents. Classes meet for four weeks from Jan. 17-Feb. 7 or Mar. 7-28.

Fit Fridays: Rebounding, Zumba, Hooping, Boot Camp, Jump Rope Sports and Yoga are the fitness formats experienced in this unique program. Nutritional education also included. Classes will be held in the Darien Town Hall gymnasium starting Friday, Jan. 13 for eight weeks. Boys and girls class for ages 6-12 will run from 4- 4:45 p.m. while girls class for ages 10-14 will be held from 5-5:45 p.m. Fee is $110 for Darien residents/$132 for non-residents.

Dance Your Feet Silly: This is a dance, Stretch-n-play dance party for lil' feet where pint-sized party animals 'dance their feet silly.’ In this 45 min program, 3-5 year-olds can just let loose and be themselves—little bundles of natural energy that are endlessly curious about new sounds and experiences. They can socialize, move to age-appropriate music, dance with scarves, maracas, add jingly belly skirts and play games with the new friends they'll make. Classes will be held in the Darien Town Hall gymnasium starting Wednesday, Jan. 11 for eight weeks. Class will run from 1:45-2:30 p.m. Fee is $110 for Darien residents/$132 for non-residents.

Kiddie Boot Camp: This program was developed ‘Bodywise By Betty,’ designed to enhance overall development and improve fitness, balance, agility and proprioception of young children ages 3-5 with a fun, never boring and very active program. Our 'Kiddie Boot Camp' will focus on developing your child's body awareness, listening skills, flexibility and strength in a fun, positive manner using simple exercises and games, mini obstacle courses, and multiple fitness stations. Classes will be held in the Darien Town Hall gymnasium starting Friday, Jan. 13 for eight weeks from 1:45-2:30 p.m. Fee is $110 for Darien residents/$132 for non-residents.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics Classes): Classes will run for four weeks on Mondays or Fridays throughout the winter months. Classes include Lego Robotics, Minecraft Power Users, Lego in Motion and Coding in Minecraft. Visit the Parks and Recreation website for a complete list of classes and age groups. Adult Programs

Adult Paddle Tennis Lessons: Certified Platform Tennis Professionals will be offering adult clinics at Weed Beach this winter. Instruction will focus on stroke production, strategy and teamwork with a mixture of high intensity drills, point-situation drills, technique work and match play. Clinics will run for eight weeks starting Jan. 9 on either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Check the website or call the office for specific times and levels. The fee is $320 for Darien residents; $384 for non-residents for these 1 ½ hour clinics. Pre-registration is required for these programs.

HIIT 2B Fit: Try this High Intensity Interval Training class. Get ready to push yourself to your limit for short bursts of time and focus on total body toning during recovery periods. H.I.I.T training burns significantly more calories than a traditional steady pace workout of the same duration—even when class is over. Take your fitness to the next level while having a blast. Each small group interval class is focused on the entire body. We will incorporate basic body weight exercises as well as equipment to push you past your comfort zone to see real change.
