One hundred years ago, just before New Year’s Eve 1917, the Stamford Harbor and most local tributaries froze over after a frigid cold front rolled in. According to “A Maritime History of the Stamford Waterfront,” by Karen Jewell, it was a rare site to see and has only been recorded several times.
The author quotes the Stamford Advocate saying people were racing their Model Ts out to the Stamford lighthouse and back again.
For New Year’s Eve this year, the early forecast said it will be raining and 45 degrees. We would rather take the opportunity to race out across the harbor.
