The importance of maintaining ones' physical strength and balance in the later years is the topic of an upcoming educational session at the Darien Senior Center on Monday, Sept. 27, at 12:45 p.m. A Matter of Balance, will be presented by Frank Callahan, RN, a certified personal fitness trainer with Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County.

Callahan will discuss the importance of remaining physically active, how balance and strength are vital to staying safe and active and offer simple balance exercises that can help to prevent falls and other injuries. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and shoes and be prepared to practice simple exercises while sitting or standing.

"Older adults are often concerned that they are becoming increasingly unsteady on their feet. As a result, many tend to cut back on their activity level rather than increase it," Callahan said. "Fortunately, there are safe, easy and effective exercises that can be done at home to improve overall health and maintain good balance."

In addition to being a certified personal fitness trainer, Frank Callahan is a Registered Nurse with more than 20 years of experience caring for Fairfield County seniors. A senior himself, he practices daily yoga, sings with the Good News Gospel Choir, and performs in community theater. A graduate of Marist and Hunter Colleges, Callahan also has extensive teaching experience. His personal philosophy about aging is an important part of his teaching and he believes that a person's "activity age" is in many ways more relevant than their chronological age.
