New backpacks containing school supplies will be distributed to Norwalk students thanks to the annual backpack drive conducted by The United Church of Rowayton Board of Christian Outreach (BOCO) program. From now through Aug. 15, the church meeting house will be open to receive backpacks Monday to Friday, 9 to 5.

“This has been such a successful program,” says Sarah Ritchey, BOCO chairperson. “Last year, 110 backpacks went to children. This year our goal is to send 125 backpacks to students.”
Donors are asked to fill the backpacks with a few items from the following list: colored pencils, pens, spiral notebooks, crayons, notebook paper, pencils and sharpeners, markers, rulers, tape, staplers with staples, and calculators.

The backpacks are sent to the Department of Children and Families for distribution to needy children from kindergarten through high school.

Wisenite Laurent of DCF says, ”Students today need so much more equipment than before, and school materials can be expensive. Both students and parents like the backpacks because the supplies can help children complete their assignments more easily.”

The United Church of Rowayton is located at 210 Rowayton Avenue. The meeting house is directly behind the church. Donated backpacks can be placed in the lobby of the meeting house.
