State football playoffs: 10 teams in region qualify
Ten teams from the Hearst Connecticut Newspapers region have qualified for the CIAC state football playoffs following Thursday's Thanksgiving Day games.
In Class LL, Fairfield Prep's come-from-behind 29-20 win over West Haven got the Jesuits (9-2) a No. 7 seed, and they will play at No. 2 Glastonbury (10-1). Prep's win also eliminated three-time defending champion Xavier and vaulted Ridgefield (9-2) into the No. 8 seed. The Tigers will play at SWC champion and No. 1 seed Newtown (12-0).
In Class L, the biggest surprise of the day came out of New Canaan, where the Rams, the state's top-ranked team, dropped a 28-24 decision to rival Darien. With the win, the Blue Wave (10-1) moved into the No. 1 spot and will play host to No. 8 and defending champion Hand (8-3). New Canana (11-1) dropped to No. 3 and will play host to Farmington (9-2).
In Class M, Bethel's surprising 20-0 win over SWC runner-up Brookfield moved the Bobcats (9-2) into the No. 4 spot. They will play host to Brookfield (9-3), which slipped to No. 5. Barlow (9-2) beat Weston 46-14 to move up to No. 3, where the Falcons will meet No. 3 Gilbert/Northwest Regional of Winsted (9-2), most likely at Western Connecticut in Danbury. St. Joseph (10-2), the FCIAC runner-up, routed Trumbull 61-26 and will be the No. 2 seed. The Cadets will play host to No. 7 Ledyard (9-2).
In Class S, two-time defending champion Ansonia (12-0), which has won 40 straight games and will most likely return to the top spot as the state's No. 1 team, is the No. 2 seed following a 66-28 drubbing of Naugatuck, in which Arkeel Newsome scored seven touchdowns. The Chargers will play host to No. 7 Coginchaug (9-2).
First-round games are set for Tuesday at 6:30 with the semifinals Dec. 7 and the finals Dec. 13-14 at Central Connecticut in New Britain.
