The Celebrate Life Committee of St John church will sponsor a panel discussion of ethical, legal, medical, financial and political perspectives on health-care issues on Sunday at 12:45 p.m. The event is open to the public.

The panel discussion will be in the Blanchard Hall behind St John Roman Catholic Church, 1986 Post Road. Refreshments will be available at 12:15 p.m. with the panel discussion to follow. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers.

The discussion will include:

"� The Catholic perspective on medical directives, ordinary versus extraordinary care, assisted nutrition and hydration and surrogate decision making;

"� What your doctor needs to know about patient wishes, the importance of the patient and family in medical-care decisions, problems doctors face in end-of-life care and implications of today's issues for the patient;

"� Insurance portability, removal of restrictions on health insurance competition, tort reform and pricing for medical services;

"� The state of the pro-life movement in Connecticut and how to strengthen our defense of life against growing dangers.

The panel members are: Deacon Thomas J. Davis, Jr., a Greek Catholic Deacon; Dr. Albert DiMeo, head of the Department of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery at St. Vincent's Hospital; Robert Merkle, a financial professional who is seeking the 2010 Republican nomination for the 4th District of the U.S. House of Representatives, 4th District and B. Richard Giordano, wwner and manager of a diverse financial services company and the 2006 candidate for the Stamford-Darien 27th State Senate District.
