Republican Club of Darien announces spring speakers
The Darien Republican Club will launch its 2012 Spring Speakers Forum on March 24 with First Selectman Jayme Stevenson.
The event, which runs from 8:40 to 9:40 a.m. at the Darien Community Association, is titled "Regionalization Through a Council of Governments (COG) and its Potential Impact for Darien." Doors open at 8 a.m. for coffee and a light continental breakfast. The club will also host a Republican straw poll for the presidential candidates for those who arrive early. The club's annual meeting of members will follow at 9:45 am.
On Thursday, March 29, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., at the Stamford Sheraton Hotel, journalist Nicholas Wapshott, author of the acclaimed book "Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher: A Political Marriage," will discuss his latest book, "Keynes Hayek: The Clash That Defined Modern Economics."
"Occasionally, a book is published on a subject and at a time when it really does contribute to a contemporary debate. Nicholas Wapshott's `Keynes Hayek' has been published just at the moment when governments and economists are debating how to resolve the current financial crisis, with the double problems of stimulus and austerity being sprinkled liberally about. In the US, this is at the centre of the presidential election campaign, with candidates debating the role of the government and the individual, reflecting the debates of Keynes and Hayek."
The author will be available to sign/personalize each copy. RSVP early with the number of attendees and number of books requested. Light food will be served along with a cash bar.
On Saturday morning, April 21, from 8 to 10 a.m., at the DCA, the club will host a pre-presidential primary event with a guest from each Republican presidential candidate's campaign. Each guest will remain a surprise should any of the planned speakers need to send a proxy. Questions are welcome. Connecticut's primary election will take place the following Tuesday, April 24, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
