DARIEN — Despite the election, 29 Representative Town Meeting seats are available.

Thirty-seven members ran for the RTM, leaving 29 open seats in the group of 100 members. Four write-in candidates’ names were available upon request at the polls.

Empty seats for these positions can be filled via a caucus process that happens at any point during the year. District chairs recruit members to fill vacancies. These members need 25 signatures from within their district and go through an interview with members of their district before being elected.

Members chosen via caucus serve until the next election, as opposed to the regular two-year term RTM members serve. According to RTM officials, the number of vacancies this year are a result of many of the members being elected via a caucus during the 2015 election.
