Public hearing ends on liquor store sites
The commission has about two months to make a decision.
Stew Leonard's petitioned the city to change the regulation that requires liquor stores to be at least 2,000 feet from each other.
In Danbury, Stew Leonard's grocery store at 99 Federal Road is about a half-mile from the Stew Leonard's Wine Shop at 59 Federal Road. The company wants to operate both under one roof, but there is already an established liquor store nearby.
At the Sept. 14 public hearing, opponents to the change said it would allow liquor stores on every street corner. They argued neighborhoods could be hurt if several liquor stores concentrate in an area.
Supporters of the change said the regulation is no longer needed because the state Department of Liquor Control restricts the number of liquor stores in a city or town based on its population.
