Police: Man charged with ‘series of strong-arm robberies’ in West Hartford

WEST HARTFORD — A man was taken into custody on 10 active arrest warrants in connection with the alleged theft of designer sunglasses from multiple businesses, according to police.

Angel Maldonado, 29, would sometimes use force against employees during the incidents, Capt. Eric Rocheleau said.

He was charged with second-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit second-degree larceny, three counts of third-degree robbery, three counts of conspiracy to commit third-degree robbery, two counts of third-degree larceny, two counts of conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny and two counts of organized retail theft.

The 10 warrants stemmed from an investigation by the department’s Detective Division and the Community Support Unit into a series of robberies of design sunglasses from several businesses, leading to the identification of Maldonado as an alleged suspect, according to Rocheleau.

He said Maldonado was believed to have been involved in incidents in 12 incidents in West Hartford, as well as others in Newington, Wethersfield, Bristol, Hartford and Avon. Ten arrest warrants were applied for and granted for the West Hartford cases.

Maldonado was taken into custody without incident at the Travel Inn Motel on Weston Street in Hartford on Wednesday.

He is being held on a $225,000 bond. Two additional warrants for the West Hartford incidents are pending, Rocheleau said.

Rocheleau said they were investigating a potential accomplice in several of the thefts.
