Parks and Recreation announces winter schedule
The Darien Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for residents. Registration for programs takes place online at www.darienct.gov/parkrec, at the Parks and Recreation office in Town Hall or through the mail. For more information, call 203-656-7325.
Future Stars basketball: Future Stars Basketball Academy will be offering an instructional program for boys and girls 5 to 10 on Monday and Thursday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium. The program will meet for eight weeks starting Jan. 6. The fee is $215 for residents and $258 for nonresidents. The program will include Future Stars' "Lessons of Life" educational program and will be run by former college star and NBA player Frank Oleynick.
Piano lessons: Classroom keyboards and all materials are included in the registration fee. Classes for beginning children 6 and up will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. The course meets for nine weeks starting Jan. 7 in the Town Hall small gymnasium. The fee is $200 for residents and $240 for nonresidents.
Tiny Tots Soccer: Blue Wave Kickers' Tiny Tots Soccer engages children in physical activity while developing their motor and basic soccer skills. Mommy/Daddy & Me classes are offered on Friday and Saturday, and classes for children 3 to 5 meet Wednesday through Saturday. The first winter session begins in early December, and session two in early February.
Blue Wave Kickers Little Athletes: Blue Wave Kickers staff will engage children in physical activity while developing motor skills and sports fundamentals and help build confidence and self-esteem by playing fun games built around sports such as soccer, basketball and t-ball. The program will run Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. or 1:30 to 2:15 p.m., and Thursday from 1:15 to 2 p.m. for six weeks in the Town Hall gymnasium. The first session begins Dec. 4 and session two starts Feb. 5. The fee is $110 for residents and $132 for nonresidents.
Karate: Darien Martial Arts Academy will offer karate lessons at its studio on Heights Road. Improved strength and stamina, better balance and improved listening and concentration skills are a few examples of how martial arts can complement both classroom and sports performance. The 12-week program takes place starting Dec. 2. The fee is $425 for residents, $510 for nonresidents.
Junior Paddle tennis lessons: The clinics are an introduction to the game of paddle tennis. Clinics will use fun drills and games to teach participants the rules and strategies. Paddles will be provided, or participants may use their own. Clinics will run for nine weeks n Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday for two age groups -- for 7 to 10 and 11 to 14. The fee is $240 for residents and $258 for nonresidents.
Pee-Wee Tennis: New Level Sports will be offering indoor pee-wee tennis lessons at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium starting in January. Lessons for children 3 to 5 are Mondays from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Lessons are also offered Monday or Thursday in 45-minute increments from 12:15 to 3:15 p.m. Each participant will receive a tennis racket. The fee is $125 for residents, $150 for nonresidents.

Guitar lessons: Children learn chords, scales and theory. Classes meet Wednesdays in the Town Hall small gymnasium Jan. 8 to March 5. Beginners meet from 4 to 5 p.m. or 5 to 6 p.m. and intermediates meet from 6 to 7 p.m. The program is for children 8 to 15. The fee is $220 for residents, $264 for nonresidents.
Girls yoga: Yoga enhances sports training and dance and increases strength and flexibility as well as attentiveness and awareness. Classes take place at Elements Yoga & Wellness Center on Heights Road Tuesday for ages 11 to 14 from 3 to 3:50 p.m. and for ages 7 to 10 from 4 to 4:50 p.m. The fee is $185 for residents, $222 for nonresidents.
Adult paddle tennis lessons: Buddy Scudder, certified platform tennis professional, will be offering clinics at Weed Beach. Instruction will focus on stroke production, strategy and teamwork with drills, technique work and match play. Clinics will run for nine weeks starting Jan. 4 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday. The fee is $360 for residents and $432 for nonresidents for one-and-a-half-hour clinics.
Boot Camp with Nichole Arno: Nichole Arno will be offering boot camp and kickboxing classes at the Darien Town Hall.
