On the market: Updated and fresh
Adorable is the first word to suit this classic Colonial-style home at 480 Hollow Tree Ridge Road in Darien. A comfortable jaunt up from Rowayton Center, the backyard abuts the golf course of the Wee Burn Country Club.
There's a long, circular driveway shielded by a wall of hemlocks. At the front is a large magnificent three-trunk white birch tree that adds to the picturesque quality.
The house does not seem large from the front, but long, starting at the attached three-car garage on the north side. Over this is an addition, which adds up to the substantial 4,250 square feet of space.
The front stone path gives a taste of the updates put into this 1952 structure, which feels fresh and somewhat new.
The entrance opens onto dark hardwood floors, and while there are five separate paths to take once inside, the grand picture window, straight on, with the view out to the back, pulls you forward, where there is a cozy den or library with a small fireplace tucked into the paneled wood walls. There is also an old set of French doors and built-in shelves and cabinets. The ceiling-high window, however, which is made up of many small panes and gives great light, is the best part.
To the left is a living room centered on another east-side bay window. A fireplace with a fine, broad mantel and dark marble tiling stands opposite French doors that lead out to a sun room, which has a slate floor and is surrounded by long sash windows. To the left it looks upon a good-sized patio that's snuggly enclosed by the house on three sides, touched by rose bushes and a large holly tree.
From here is the kitchen. Thought not large, the renovations and decorations that have been done make it seem enormous. A island contains a four-burner gas stove. A wet bar is central on one wall, with an array of cabinets and drawers. The refrigerator and sub-zero have been tucked into the wall, and the whole room is bursting with a bright white finish balanced with the lighter color of the wood floors.

Steps descend from the kitchen into a wide family space, with an attached half bath. There's an abundance of built-in space, including a long window seat above large drawers and a corner desk area.
The room over the garage has a fireplace and grand cathedral ceiling, along with its own full bath. There are artist-style angled skylights that bring in a whole section of northern exposure. This is either an in-law apartment or, in the best-case scenario, a true artist's studio.
Upstairs, the three smaller bedrooms are adequate spaces, with two of them sharing a Jack-and-Jill bathroom at the center between two separate staircases.
The master bedroom is pleasant enough, but dwarfed by the sprawling bathroom, with its separate shower and spa tub, double sinks and, at the back, a large sitting room or walk-in closet space.
If that all isn't enough, there is another bedroom suite downstairs, just right of the entrance.
