On the market: Circa 1800 Colonial maintains antique ambiance
There's a reason a house stands -- and stays beautiful -- for more than 200 years, and it's not just renovation work. Homes, like the antique Colonial at 165 Old King's Highway North in Darien, are built with care, quality and considerable craftsmanship.
It's also not often that one finds what would have been a relatively small house nearly doubled in size by an antique addition, done in 1890, which is practically seamless in relation to the original structure.
The long, circular driveway is attached to the main road, as well as adjacent Circle Road. The original barn, from 1800, serves as a separate three-car garage and features the original stable doors.
The grounds are large and usable, and include a brook, and a sense of privacy is buoyed by the large unbuildable section of wetlands toward the south. However, there is a potential for subdivision on the east end of the property, if anyone wanted to sell some of that privacy.
A large ground-level porch abuts the driveway and opens through its original front doors into the great room. The gorgeous space features an enormous fireplace with a fieldstone chimney, 22-foot-wide hand-notched ceiling beams, and original nutmeg moldings.
A separate entryway off the driveway opens into the original part of the house, where the low ceiling that typifies houses of this period gives a deceptive impression that space is limited. But at 3,249 square feet, there is ample room.
The original living room is cozy and features an additional fireplace. This area extends into a formal dining room, which adjoins an updated kitchen with Craftsman-style cabinetry and granite countertops.
The windows throughout the house feature cast-iron trim, but are updated for energy efficiency. There are also numerous classic touches, such as vintage door knobs and fixtures. The chimney that starts in the great room looks even more magnificent and grand outside as it climbs the length of the clapboard-side building.

Upstairs the hallway takes angular turns that again add to an expansive feeling in the house. The bedrooms are not large, but terrifically quaint and cozy. There isn't a great deal of closet space, but for the right person it's ample, especially considering the many other opportunities for storage.
The four bedrooms are all upstairs, including the master suite, which features some great built-in features, among them a fireplace and a clever shoe rack in the one closet.
There's a pull-down attic with significant storage, and a ceiling air vent that's solar-powered.
The basement, meanwhile, runs the length of the house, and while the three rooms that make it up are unfinished, the space, surrounded by stone walls, has that wonderful historic flavor one might find in Williamsburg or Sturbridge Village.
