Noroton Yacht Club weathers pair of major storms to conclude season
Despite the damage of two major storms, Commodore Randy Tankoos of the Norton Yacht Club said the Club opened on time in 2013 with substantial repairs to the club house and patio. The club also completed the construction of a new pier designed to withstand future storms.
The club's successful 2013 season could not have been possible without the enthusiastic volunteerism from its many members, including construction headed by Art Collins and infrastructure improvements by member Joe Healy.
The Memorial Day Series and the July 4 Series were won by the team of Macleod and Kinney, and the Labor Day Series was won by Karl Ziegler. Winners of the Commodores races were the Macleod/Kinney team and Galloway. The Sonar is a 23-foot keel boat designed by Noroton's Bruce Kirby, who is a member of U.S. Sailing's Hall of Fame.
Winners in the Ideal 18 Fleet included Tucker Hersam for the July 4 series, Owen and Gary Coventry for the Commodore's race and Nicole Casey for the Vice Commodore's race. The Ideal 18s are club-owned boats that are available for members for racing and recreational sailing.
