AVON — Less than 24 hours after family and friends held a vigil for the missing teenager, Ronan Hernsdorf-Smith was found safe, according to police Lt. John Schmalberger.

Hernsdorf-Smith, 17, was missing since Aug. 30 when they took an Uber to Enfield to meet with an acquaintance. Friends and family had no idea where the transgender teenager, who uses they/them pronouns, could’ve gone next as they weren’t using their debit card, cellphone or social media accounts.

Schmalberger said Hernsdorf-Smith was found Thursday in Chicopee, Mass. He said the teenager is safe and is with their family.

Family and friends held a vigil for the 17-year-old Wednesday evening at the Avon Town Center Gazebo.

Family and friends also raised money to hire a private investigator through a GoFundMe campaign. As of Thursday afternoon, almost $25,800 was raised for the effort.

Any funds not used toward the search of the teenager will go toward finding trafficked children, the campaign states.
