Melvin Mason, Stratford Star editor, passes at age 43
Stratford Star Editor Melvin Mason has died at the age of 43.
Mason is survived by his wife of two years, Alison, and stepdaughter, Laura.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., at Howard K. Hill Funeral Services, 1287 Chapel Street, New Haven.
“Melvin was one of those genuinely good, caring people we are blessed to have intersect with our lives. I feel very fortunate to have known and worked with him. His reputation as a professional journalist and his good nature preceded him before becoming part of the HAN family. His wife, Allison, stepdaughter Laura and their entire family are foremost in our thoughts and prayers. We grieve for them and we will always miss Melvin’s kind manner, easy smile and his dedication to his readers,” said Martin V. Hersam, CEO of the HAN Network.
Mason joined Hersam Acorn, now the HAN Network, as a reporter for The Darien Times in July of 2013. He was named editor of The Stratford Star in January of 2015. He had also been a reporter in New Canaan before joining the HAN Network.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Melvin Mason,” Stratford Mayor Laura Hoydick said. “It is a tragic loss — not only for his family, friends and loved ones, but for the Stratford community that he has become an essential part of through his dedicated work as editor of the Star. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those he leaves behind, and we will always remember him as a good man who did a difficult and important job with kindness and passion.”
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
