Mather Homestead education center breaks ground
Construction on the new education center at the Mather Homestead recently broke ground.
A construction crew will now be on-site, working full time Monday to Friday.
The new 1,800-square-foot educational center — to be named the Elizabeth W. Chilton Education Center — will have a big, open space to host lectures, school groups, art exhibits, and more.
It will be on the Mather Homestead’s property at 19 Stephen Mather Road.
It will seat 75 people and would enable the Mather Homestead to hold its events rain or shine.
“We are 90 percent done with the fundraising,” said Lauren Swenson, the Mather Homestead Foundation’s executive director. “We raised the money through all the spring events we held.”
The work is expected to take about six months.
