Teen writers group meets every month

This program meets on the second Thursday of the month at 3:30 p.m. in the The Harris Writer's Room. Aspiring to be the next big author? Just want to write a better blog post? Come hone your skills and share with other young authors in the teen writers group.

Fall book discussion series dates, theme

Darien Library recently announced the book selections and discussion dates for its fall book discussion series. The theme of the series is "Home and Away." Library staff members will lead discussions about four carefully selected, critically acclaimed, and discussion-worthy books.

The series consists of The Paris Wife by Paula McLain on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m., Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m., In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m., and Next to Love by Ellen Feldman on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m., the Fall Book Discussion Series will conclude with a special guest lecture by Mark Schenker of Yale University.

The library has copies of the books available for patrons to borrow, but prior reading of the books is not necessary to attend the discussions.

Fall Into Art: Create, celebrate, explore

Darien Library presents "Fall Into Art," a series of hands-on programs for children that is designed to stimulate the imagination and inspire creativity.

From cartooning to graphic design, digital art to collage, kids will have the opportunity to explore and celebrate many different forms of art.

Fall storytime sessions planned

This fall, Darien Library will offer two storytime sessions, Fall 1 and Fall 2. Fall 1 registration ends on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Fall 1 session runs from Monday, Sept. 12 to Friday, Oct. 21. Fall 2 registration will begin on Monday, Oct. 10 and end on Monday, Oct. 24. Its session runs from Monday, Oct. 31 to Friday, Dec. 9.

Each session is six weeks in length.

Parents and caregivers may register online at darienlibrary.org/youth. Storytime is tailored for children ages birth to six years old.

"Giggles and Rhymes" is for pre-walking babies and a parent or caregiver. Join them for fingerplays, songs, rhymes, and movement on Wednesdays from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m.

"Born to Read," for walkers up to 24 months and their parent or caregiver, is a fast-paced storytime for lively toddlers that includes books, songs, fingerplays and movement.

Classes take place Mondays from 9:30 to 10 a.m., Tuesdays from 9:30 to 10 a.m., or Thursdays from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

"Side By Side," for children two and three years old and their parent or caregiver, includes books, rhymes, and movement activities.

Sessions take place on Mondays from 10:30 to 11 a.m., Tuesdays from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m., Thursdays from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m., or Fridays from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

"Totally Preschool" is a program that gives four and five-year-olds a chance to grow in independence by engaging in stories, act-outs, and songs.

Sessions are Tuesdays from 1:30 to 2 p.m., Thursdays from 1:30 to 2 p.m., or Fridays from 9:30 to 10 a.m.

"Bookworms" is a more sophisticated storytime for five and six-year-olds and includes more complex stories: folktales, humor, and adventure. They meet on Tuesdays from 4:15 to 4:45 p.m.

"Little Clickers" is a chance for three to five-year-olds and their parent or caregiver to share an interactive computer class.

This technology program introduces kid-friendly websites and helps your preschooler learn basic computer skills. Sessions are Fridays from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

Parents will be notified via email of the results of the Fall 1 session lottery drawings by Saturday, Sept. 10, and by Saturday, Oct. 29 for the Fall 2 session.

Orientation session for new families

The children's library is having an orientation for all families new to Darien in 2011 on Saturday, Sept. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m.

Parents and children will learn about programs and services for kids and adults, take a tour of the library, and obtain library cards. Registration is not needed, just drop-in to one of the orientations. Snacks will be served.

Children's library chat set to launch Sept. 6

Children's library chat is a new monthly program at Darien Library where librarians and parents or caregivers can share ideas and questions about great reading materials for kids. The fall dates for children's library chat are Tuesday, Sept. 6, Tuesday, Oct. 25, and Monday, Nov. 14. The program will be take place at 11:15 a.m. in the Children's Library.
