To the Editor:

With the wonderful sightings of whales off Darien, Stamford and Greenwich in the last few weeks, and as a local kayaker, fisherman and swimmer with children, I am deeply concerned for the preservation and health of the Atlantic Ocean. I strongly support the proposal made by Senator Blumenthal and the Connecticut Congressional delegation to create the first national marine monument in the Atlantic Ocean right here off our coast. Permanent protection of the New England undersea canyons and seamounts would create a haven protecting whales, sea birds, sea turtles, dolphins and other marine life from offshore oil and gas development, commercial fishing, seabed mining and other threats.

Now it’s up to the Obama Administration to make this proposal a reality and create the first marine national monument in the U.S. Atlantic.
