DARIEN — A “build your own boat” relay race was the must-do activity at the annual Showdown on the Sound event, which served as a fundraiser for Shatterproof, a nonprofit organization that raises money to transform addiction treatment.

Participants took part in homemade contraptions big and small in the waters of Long Island Sound for the relay, which was just one of many activities offered Saturday at Weed Beach in Darien.

Since its inception, the event has raised more than $815,000 for Shatterproof’s programs. Organizers said they hoped money raised at this year’s event will bring the total to $1 million or more.

The event honors the life of Darien native Michael Taylor, who died from opioid addiction. Participants are invited to take part in events and sports that he enjoyed, according to his friends who organize the annual event.

Growing up in Darien, Taylor was an all-state tennis player at Darien High School and played Division I varsity tennis for three years. He graduated from Villanova University and started a career in marketing. He loved traveling, adventures and spending time on the water, his family said.

But Taylor also suffered from addiction after he was prescribed opioid medications after reconstructive shoulder surgery to repair a tennis injury during his junior year at Villanova, according to organizers.
