Fall programs announced by Parks and Rec
The Darien Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for the residents of Darien. Registration for programs takes place online at www.darienct.gov/parkrec, at the Parks and Recreation office located in Town Hall, or through the mail. Future Stars Basketball: Darien Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce that Future Stars Basketball Academy will be offering an instructional program for boys and girls ages 5-10 this fall on Thursday afternoons from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium. Children will be divided by age. This program will meet for eight weeks from Oct. 19-Dec.14. The program fee is $175 for Darien residents/$210 for non-residents. This program will include Future Stars’ “Lessons of Life” educational program.
Slap Shot Floor Hockey: No longer just a game for a frozen pond, Floor Hockey is a one size fits all game of speed, coordination, and thrills. This gym class favorite is now available after school. Game play and skill work to include stick handling, dodging, ball control, and, of course, shooting will be introduced and practiced from week to week. This program for ages 5-10 will meet on Wednesday afternoons from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Darien Town Hall gymnasium. This program will meet for eight weeks from Oct. 4-Nov. 29. The program fee is $125 for Darien residents/$150 for non-residents.
Woodshop for Kids: Join our instructors for this new class and learn the basics of working with wood. In this four-week workshop participants will create a hinged wooden storage box and an airplane from wood that kids can play with and display. This class will introduce the basics of woodworking and will include sanding, drilling with a hand drill, using wood screws, nails, and glue. The children will work with our instructor to build their project and will learn the basics of wood staining and finish their creations by applying a wood stain. This program for ages 5-10 will meet on Wednesday afternoons from 4-5 p.m. in room 205 of the Mather Center. This program will meet for four weeks from Sept. 27-Oct. 18. The program fee is $130 for Darien residents/$156 for non-residents.
Piano Lessons: This revolutionary piano program builds a musical foundation and creates a hobby that will last a lifetime. Classroom keyboards and all materials are included in the registration fee. This class is a continuing educational program that will run for nine-week intervals. Classes meet Tuesdays from Oct. 3-Dec. 5 from 4-5 p.m. in room 133 of the Mather Center. This beginners program is for children ages 6-12. The fee for this program is $200 for Darien residents; $240 for non-residents.
Drum Lessons: Want to rock out on the drums? Now is your chance to get started. All the basics are covered to help you begin your drumming journey. Not only will you learn proper technique and how to read rhythmic notation but you will also learn how to play cool rock beats and fills. Students will rotate between playing drum pads, bongos, snare drum and drum set. Drum sticks and practice pads will be provided for all students. Classes meet Thursdays from Sept. 28-Nov. 16 in room 133 of the Mather Center. This program, for children ages 8-15, will focus on beginning drums from 4-5 p.m. or intermediate drums from 5-6 p.m. The fee for this program is $270 for Darien residents; $324 for non-residents.
Rock Out After School: This program is for aspiring musicians ages who want to learn to jam with other. Each week students will rehearse a number of songs and play as a real band in both acoustic and electric settings. Students will also receive instruction on their instrument to help them get to the next level. Amplifiers, keyboards, microphones and drums will all be set up for you. Just bring your own guitar or bass. Participants must have experience and have the ability to play chords and or songs. Vocalist more than welcome too. Classes meet Mondays from Sept. 25-Nov. 6 (no class Oct. 9) in room 133 of the Mather Center. This program, for children ages 8-15, will meet from either 4-5:15 p.m. or 5:15-6:30 p.m. The fee for this program is $228 for Darien residents; $273 for non-residents.
Junior Paddle Tennis Lessons: These clinics are an introduction to the game of paddle tennis. Clinics will utilize fun drills and games to teach participants the rules and strategies of paddle tennis. Paddles will be provided, or participants may use their own. Clinics will run at Weed Beach for eight weeks starting Oct. 11 on Wednesdays, Thursday, and Saturdays for two age groups: 7-10 and 11-14. Lego in Motion: Calling all Lego enthusiasts and builders to this program. We put fun in motion as students learn how to use wheels and axles, motors, kinetic energy and balance to create numerous contraptions which will be powered with motors and battery packs. All new models to tinker with this year. Classes meet Mondays from Nov. 13-Dec. 4 in room 205 of the Mather Center. This program, for children ages in grades K-2, will meet from 4-5:30 p.m. The fee for this program is $130 for Darien residents; $156 for non-residents.
Minecraft Adventure: We may be dodging fireballs from exploding volcanos or hiding from snow giant on Mt. Everest. This will take team work and collaboration as we mine, craft, build and problem solve our precarious situation. Students will be solving this survival adventure on a teacher-monitored closed server. Classes meet Fridays from Nov. 17-Dec. 15 (no class Nov. 24) in room 205 of the Mather Center. This program, for children ages in grades 2-5, will meet from 4-5:30 p.m. The fee for this program is $130 for Darien residents; $156 for non-residents.
Mad Science: This program will be held on Thursday afternoons this fall from Sept. 28-Nov. 16. Classes for ages 3-5 will meet from 1:45-2:30 p.m. in room 119 of the Darien Town Hall. Children will explore a different science experiment each week with topics including dinosaurs, butterflies and dry ice. Classes for ages 5-8 will meet from 4-5 p.m. in room 205 of the Mather Center. These STEM focused classes are sure to stimulate the senses with new experiments each week. The fee for this program is $180 for Darien residents; $215 for non-residents.
Adult Paddle Tennis Lessons: Certified Platform Tennis Professionals will be offering adult clinics at Weed Beach this fall. Instruction will focus on stroke production, strategy and teamwork with a mixture of high intensity drills, point-situation drills, technique work and match play. Clinics will run for eight weeks starting Oct. 9 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. The fee is $345 for Darien residents; $418 for non-residents for these 1 ½ hour clinics. Three-hour “tune-up camps” will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 30 (9 a.m.- noon; 1-4 p.m.) and Sunday, Oct. 1 (9 a.m.-noon) for $110/resident; $130/non-resident at Weed Beach.
