Keynote Speaker: Donna Ferrato, Award winning photojournalist, author and domestic violence prevention advocate Donna Ferrato is an internationally acclaimed photojournalist known for her groundbreaking documentation of the hidden world of domestic violence. Ferrato’s seminal book titled: “Living with the Enemy” (published by the not-for-profit foundation Aperture, in 1991), went into four printings, and alongside exhibitions and lectures across the globe, sparked a national discussion on sexual violence and women’s rights. In 2014, Ferrato launched the I Am Unbeatable campaign to expose, document and prevent domestic violence against women and children through real stories of real people. This image was taken from Living with the Enemy, A woman, and her infant son slept peacefully after arriving at the Women Against Abuse shelter. The next morning she said, “It was our first safe night in a long, long time."

The Domestic Violence Crisis Center is hosting its 19th annual Voices of Courage spring luncheon, May 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The virtual event will feature keynote speaker, Donna Ferrato, an award-winning photojournalist, author, domestic violence prevention activist, and feminist. Ferrato’s work was selected as one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential Images of All Time.”

Ferrato’s images, and the stories behind them have helped to bring domestic violence out of the shadows, and into the light.

Attendees can purchase a special “Voices of Courage” boxed lunch from Aux Delices, available for pick up at business’s Darien, or Westport locations on the day of the event.

Aux Delices will donate a percentage of the sales from the lunch to the DVCC. The fundraising event will also feature an online silent auction which opens May 14.

“The past year has been uniquely challenging for domestic violence victims and their children given the isolation and dangerous scenarios caused by the pandemic,” Suzanne Adam, the executive director of the Domestic Violence Crisis Center said.

“The Voices of Courage luncheon is a chance for our community to connect, unite, and support domestic violence victims who rely on the lifesaving services and support we provide,” Adam said.

The DVCC is the only state-certified agency recognized by the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, serving the communities of Norwalk, Stamford, New Canaan, Darien, Westport, Weston and Wilton.

The Domestic Violence Crisis Center is located at 1111 Summer St. #203 in Stamford.
