DARIEN -- When a football team scores 27 points on its first five possessions, it's usually a recipe for success, and Darien's 41-6 shellacking of Danbury on Saturday at Darien High School was certainly no exception.

Darien's Christian Bognar provided the spark for the Blue Wave offense, as the senior fullback accounted for Darien's first three touchdowns on runs of 13, 1 and 12 yards, respectively.

"Three touchdowns is a first for me, so it felt really good. My line really stepped up for me, and if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have as much yards as I did," said Bognar, who carried the ball 19 times for 148 yards. "Last week we had a really tough loss (35-28 against St. Joseph in double overtime), and we came out of the tunnel every day for practice and gave 110 percent every play."

Bognar had a lot of help from the Blue Wave offensive line, which consistently won the battle in the trenches and opened gaping holes for Bognar and the rest of the Darien ground game.

"They controlled (the line), they pushed us, they did whatever they wanted and they were a much better team than we were," Danbury coach Dan Donovan said. "We're going to go back to work. We don't quit. We're going to go back, we're going to work and we're going to try to win the next one."

After Darien missed a 32-yard field goal on its opening possession and Danbury punted, the Blue Wave went 57 yards in five plays, capped by Bognar's first score and a 6-0 lead after the extra point was blocked by Danbury's Kolyn Pollard.

Danbury began to put together a promising drive on its next possession, but Darien's Theo Frelinghuysen intercepted Danbury's Anferny Ith. Frelinghuysen picked off the pass at the Blue Wave 22, but a holding call on the return pushed Darien back to its 12.

What followed was an 88-yard drive in 14 plays, as Bognar scored from one yard out. Quarterback Henry Baldwin hit Jackson Whiting for the two-point conversion and a 14-0 advantage.

Darien's Jay Harrison forced a Danbury fumble on the ensuing kickoff which was recovered by Brian Wiegand. Four plays later, Bognar's third touchdown put Darien in front 20-0.

"I call him the `wild boar.' He's low and quick and tough to bring down, and he's a nice weapon to have," Darien coach Rob Trifone said of Bognar. "I wouldn't want to tackle him."

After a Danbury three-and-out, Darien went 42 yards on four Henry Baldwin passes, including a six-yard touchdown strike to James Bennett for a 27-0 lead, which was also the score at halftime.

"I thought it was very important that we established the line of scrimmage early on and controlled their quarterback," Trifone said. "I don't think our team walked away from last week with any confidence loss; they were just angry at themselves that they missed an opportunity."

In the second half, an interception by Whiting killed another Danbury drive, and the Blue Wave would eventually increase their lead to 34-0 on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Baldwin to Ian Vanderhorn. Vanderhorn broke out of a tackle attempt and won the footrace to pay dirt.

With time winding down in the third quarter, Baldwin hit Kyle Gifford for a 10-yard touchdown, and the Darien substitutes closed out the game.

Danbury avoided the shutout one play after Darien had pinned the Hatters on their own 12 with a booming punt by C.J. Raia, as Danbury running back Akim Moffett took a handoff up the middle, broke to his left and sprinted down the sidelines for an 88-yard touchdown run.

"This was bounce-back week and the next two weeks we're on the road at night," Trifone said. "Trumbull and Wilton are never easy on the road, so we can't look past any of those teams."
