Darien boys tennis team falls to Greenwich, defeats Norwalk

In its season-opening meet on Wednesday, the Darien boys tennis team fell 6-1 to Greenwich, though several matches were competitive.

At first singles, Darien freshman Thorne Gregory pushed Zack Nicklaus to the end before falling 6-2, 6-4.

Darien No. 5 singles player Jeff Sload played through a blister on his hand and almost gutted out a win before being defeated 7-5, 6-2 by Axel Hebrand.

Darien's top doubles team of Dom Hansford and Nick Howe fell to Chris Salisbury and Dickson Hollister 6-2, 6-0, but nearly every game could have gone either way with multiple deuces and game point chances.

Darien's lone win was at second doubles, as freshmen Uday Avula and Harrison Walter played very well together and scored a 6-3, 6-4 win over March Chien and Henry Riccardi.

Darien rebounded with a 6-1 win over Norwalk on Thursday.

Darien swept No. 3-5 singles (Sammy Alptekin defeated Kevin Pisacrita 6-3, 6-0, Brad D'Alelio bested Steven Gaparini 6-1, 6-1 and Tyler Hatfield took down Matthew Favazzo 6-0, 6-0).

At doubles, Hansford and Howe swept their match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Peter Garcia and Max Libre. Uday Avula and Harrison Walter scored a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Nick Bocanfusa and Gary Joseph.
