An afternoon of bluegrass music is slated for Sunday, March 24, at the Talmadge Hill Church, 870 Talmadge Hill Road, Darien, to help raise money for Kids Empowered by Your Support.

The concert, which will start at 4 p.m., will feature Five in Chamber, a New Haven-based old-time and bluegrass string band with a rocking edge. The members of the band include Andrea Asprelli on fiddle, Ken McEwen on guitar, Pete Kaufman on banjo and Sean Mack on mandolin. They started working together after a series of music festivals during the summer of 2011. The band quickly galvanized and established itself as a staple in the area's bluegrass scene and is working on a debut album, slotted for release in the spring.

Five in Chamber is known for its tight arrangements, unique harmony vocals, and a shared passion for writing original music as well as studying and reinterpreting the bluegrass songbook.

Asprelli is a freelance fiddler, songwriter and vocalist as well as a violin teacher with KEY.

"The kids really enjoy seeing how versatile their instrument is," she said. "Even kids who have never listened to bluegrass have shown an interest in learning how to fiddle, just because it offers a new challenge and can be a lot of fun."

Rob Silvan, director and founder of KEYS, said "Exposure to all kinds of music is an important part of music education."

KEYS is working with the Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestra and together the two nonprofits have started an orchestra for KEYS students.

"Kids need to see musicians playing together," Silvan said. "It's the feeling of being on a team that is drawing these kids to an orchestra. They know they are special because they have this wonderful skill that they work hard to develop. And at the same time they belong to something bigger than they can be just by themselves."
