DARIEN—The Board of Education appointed a new principal for Middlesex Middle School in a unanimous vote on Tuesday night.

Shelley Sommers, who previously worked in Greenwich schools, will replace Debi Boccanfuso, who retired from Middlesex this past May after 30 years in the district.

“I think a lot of folks were concerned about our ability to find a replacement. I am pleased to say we have found that replacement,” said Dr. Dan Brenner, superintendent of Darien schools. “The idea that we were able to find a principal who was there for six years and thought of very, very highly is a coup for Darien.”

Sommers comes to Darien from Greenwich’s Central Middle School. She worked there for six years and was given the Connecticut PTA Middle School Principal of the Year award in 2015. Prior to working in Greenwich, Sommers spent 15 years in Beauford, South Carolina as a teacher, administrator, and department chair.

Sommers thanked the board and said she was honored to accept the position.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone,” she said.
