Matthew Morr , of Darien, recently graduated from Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass. on May 21. Morr received a bachelor’s degree in communication studies.

Two Darien natives received bachelor’s degrees from Hamilton College in Clinton N.Y. on May 21.

Andrew J. Fletcher , the son of Donna and James Fletcher of Darien, graduated with departmental honors in chemistry. Kelly N. Manhart , the daughter of Eileen and Walter Manhart of Darien, majored in mathematics and psychology at Hamilton.

Four Darien natives received their bachelor’s degrees from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. on May 21.

Caroline A. Bewkes , who previously attended Deerfield Academy, received a Bachelor of Arts and majored in music.

Alec J. Durkin , who previously attended Brunswick School, received a Bachelor of Arts after majoring in economics and business in the liberal arts.

Darien High School alumni John B. Fisher , who majored in geology, received a Bachelor of Science and Waverly W. Hurd , who majored in performance and communication arts, received a Bachelor of Arts cum laude.

Eastern Connecticut State University’s annual graduation ceremony was held at the XL Center in Hartford on May 16.

Sherry Gilronan , of Darien, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in business administration.

Michael Lauer , of Darien, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in business information systems.

Jacqueline Sweeney , of Darien, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in communication.

Five Darien natives graduated from Clemson University at the May 2017 commencement ceremonies in South Carolina.

Reed Wolfe Coots graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in materials science and engineering.

Robert Andrew Maley Jr. who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in marketing.

Blair J. Pelley who graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in political science.

Mackenzie Griffin Dowling majored in economics; Ryan Hanlon Friend majored in economics and international relations; Margaret Mary Wells majored in psychology and human development; and Nicole M. Williams majored in behavioral neuroscience.

Darien’s Hannah Procaccini and Jessica Ackers participated in the University of New Hampshire commencement ceremony held May 20 in Durham, N.H.

Procaccini graduated with a Bachelor of Science in communication science and disorders and Ackers graduated with a Bachelor of Science in hospitality management

Ian Crane , of Darien, graduated from Champlain College in Burlington, Vt. with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in filmmaking on May 13.

Toddler Time: Registration is open for the 2017-18 school year.

Toddler Time is a two-hour, drop-off program consisting of free play, organized play, story time, singing, art project and snack in a classroom setting.

The program begins in September and meets through May. Families can enroll their toddlers for one, two, or three days per week. To be eligible, children must turn two between Jan. 1, 2017 and Dec. 31, 2017.

The program is open to the public but space is limited.

Golf scramble: The third annual golf scramble fundraiser to benefit the Darien YMCA special-needs programs will be held June 5 at the Griffith E. Harris Golf Club in Greenwich.

The Darien Y is the largest provider of special-needs programs in the community, with annual participation rates of over 600 individuals.

All proceeds from the Darien Y Golf Scramble will go toward Darien YMCA programs for children with special needs.

This annual event was founded by Pio Bruzzese , whose son, Vincent, is on the autism spectrum. For the past eight years, Vincent Bruzzese has participated in many special-needs programs at the Darien Y, where he has had the opportunity to interact with children of different abilities.

The golf scramble event involves breakfast, an 18-hole golf tournament, and a luncheon. Sponsorships are available at the $150, $1,000 and $2,000 level. Details about sponsorships and the event are at or by contacting Pio Bruzzese at 646-660-5082 or

58th Darien Art Show and Sale

The 58th Darien Art Show and Sale returns to the Darien Arts Center ’s Weatherstone Studio from June 3 through June 10.

The awards reception will be held on June 2, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the winner of Best in Show will be announced. The winner will be given a solo exhibit in the Town Hall in the spring of 2018.

The show will be open for public viewing every day from June 3 through June 10, from noon to 5 p.m.
