DARIEN — An exciting journey around the world was celebrated by over 250 dancers of the Darien School of Dance at Darien High School on May 21.

The youngest ballerinas from the “Mom & Me” class were butterflies from Peru, dancing with their mothers in the rain forest. There were also birds from Rio, zebras from Africa, hula girls from Polynesia and tulips from Holland. The countries of Austria, China, Italy, Greece, France, Russia, Mexico, Egypt, India and the Caribbean were also represented, as well as the United States.

In order to master the art of Chinese fan dance, the fifth grade ballet class had private lessons with a ballerina from China.

Overall, the goal was to discover more about different parts of the world and the dance styles used there. Besides the dance steps, students learned what each nation or region was famous for, some key phrases and also how to count in Spanish and French.
