Hollow Tree Self Storage opens space to store community’s wine collections: ‘There’s nothing else like it’

The partners at Hollow Tree Self Storage in Darien are continuing to keep the needs of the neighborhood in mind. This summer, local wine lovers can store their prized collections in the company’s brand-new wine storage vault.

They hatched the idea pre-pandemic to fill a missing niche in the market. The vault would not only service individual collectors, but also restaurateurs and retailers buying bottles in bulk. The owners decided to move forward with the concept as the pandemic wined down.

“We already had the space, we just had to put it together,” Facility General Manager Maria Hernandez said. “There’s nothing else like it in the area.”

Hollow Tree’s wine vault has over 100 individual units that can accommodate collections as small as 150 bottles to as large as 5,600 bottles. The units vary in price and start at $59 a month.

The subterranean space is free from UV light and vibration and is designed to follow strict temperature and humidity parameters to prevent fluctuations.

The wood-colored doors offer a more natural look, and steel wine racks are available so clients can store their bottles horizontally. Horizontal storage keeps the cork in contact with the wine, which prevents it from drying out and shrinking. Boxes with dividers will also be available for storage purposes.

“If you don’t want the expense and maintenance of a wine cellar in your home, this is an economical and flexible alternative,” Hernandez said. “Unlike the more common bulk-bottle storage, this is your own private space and is accessible seven days a week”

The vault will be open to clients Monday through Sunday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Each room is equipped with an individual alarm. The vault is monitored by 24-hour video surveillance and can only be accessed through a secure entryway. A backup generator guarantees the integrity of the collections in the event of a power outage or weather event, and protects the units from theft or vandalism.

Aside from its top-notch design and security measures, the vault also features a variety of hospitality benefits, continuing Hollow Tree’s culture of providing great products and professional service. Clients can chill a bottle in the refrigerator while cataloging their latest purchase and utilize the wet bar to prepare a snack and a quick glass.

You can also sample your selections in the wine tasting area and entertain up to 20 people in the conference room. This glass-encased space is equipped with AV, Wi-Fi, TV and ethernet capabilities, making it the perfect place to hold a business meeting over a bottle (or two).

Additionally, those ordering wine by the case-load — including restaurateurs and retailers — can send their deliveries directly to Hollow Tree, Hernandez said.

Hollow Tree is now taking appointments to meet with those interested in the wine storage vault. Tours begin as early as July. To schedule an appointment, call 203-655-2018 or email manager@hollowtreestorage.com.
