Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County will offer a bereavement support group on loss of a life partner for members of the LGBT community this winter to help individuals cope with the death of a partner or loved one. The group will meet at the Triangle Community Center, 16 River Street in Norwalk, on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8 through Feb. 29.

"Given the non-traditional nature of a same-sex relationship, the bereavement needs of the LGBT community are unique when it comes to the experience of losing a loved one," said Kristin Carpenter, a grief and bereavement counselor with Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County. "This support group will address the needs of those who may feel disenfranchised in their grief. These are people who may have been kept away from their partner at the end of life. There are incidents where individuals have been banned from attending their partner's funeral or from having any contact with their partner's family, both of which can be important sources of comfort and support while grieving."

Participants in this bereavement support group will have an opportunity to share their feelings in a safe environment and will gain a deeper understanding of their unique experience of loss and begin the process of healing.

There is no fee for participation in the bereavement support group but registration is required. For more information or to register call 203-834-6341, ext. 255.
