GREENWICH — Officers apprehended three teenagers and charged them with breaking into cars and attempting to flee from early Tuesday morning, police said.

An officer spotted a car driving in Cos Cob around 4 a.m. without its headlights, police said.

“When police tried to stop it, the car sped away. The three occupants abandoned the car after a minor collision disabled it. The occupants were subsequently located and taken into custody,” a police statement said.

The identities of the youths were not made public due to their age.

Police recovered items that had been taken from local residents’ unlocked cars in the neighborhood. In addition to the larceny and burglary charges, the 15-year old operator of the car is also facing numerous motor vehicle violations.

The cases of the three juveniles were referred to Juvenile Court. Police said the youths were from Bridgeport.

Town police are reminding residents to lock their cars and take their keys with them when they park.

Authorities have seen a rash of car thefts and break-ins over the summer.

Three luxury cars were stolen in one night in early September, and there have been numerous reports of purses and loose change stolen from other vehicles in Cos Cob, Riverside and other parts of town.
