MONROE — One person died after a rollover crash on Route 111 in Monroe Wednesday afternoon left the roadway closed to traffic for several hours, according to police officials.

Police Lt. Stephen Corrone said police got the call just before noon for a rollover on Route 111 near its intersection with Route 34. He said responding officers found an overturned vehicle that had hit a bridge abutment on Route 111.

“Officers were able to remove the operator of the vehicle, who was then transported to St. Vincent’s” Medical Center in Bridgeport,” Corrone said.

The individual died as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash.

The victim was identified as Kenneth Tobin, 53, of Lazy Brook Road in Monroe. according to the Monroe Sun.

Kevin Catalano, spokesman for the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department, said two fire trucks responded for what was an initial call of someone trapped in a vehicle. Catalano said the initial dispatch indicated there was also a minor fluid spill.

Carrone said the roadway was shut down for a little more than four hours, reopening around 4:15 p.m.
