Parks Department lists upcoming programs
The Darien Parks and Recreation Department is offering a variety of programs for town residents. Registration for programs takes place online at www.darienct.gov/parkrec, at the Parks and Recreation office in Town Hall, or through the mail. For information call 203-656-7325. Among the summer programs being offered are:
Safe Boating Classes: Professional Marine Education will offer an eight hour course that will meet the requirements to obtain a Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate and Personal Watercraft Operations. The first class will meet on June 2 and June 4, from 6 to 10 p.m. The second class will be held on June 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both classes will be held at Darien Town Hall. The fee for this program is $90/Darien resident; $108/nonresident. Registration is required.
Dog Obedience and Socialization Class: This course will focus on attention, some limited heeling, and sits and downs. Classes will feature games and attention work to build a solid relationship with your dog. These classes are designed to be an introduction to obedience and socialization. Classes will be run by Rick Weatherstone from Tactical Response LLC. All dogs should be at least 6 months old and must have all their vaccinations. Classes will meet on Saturdays for five weeks from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Cherry Lawn Park starting June 20. The fee for this program is $125/Darien resident; $150/nonresident. Registration is required.
Guitar Lessons: Learn chords, scales, theory and, how to play favorite songs. Classes meet each Wednesday in the Mather Center starting June 17 through July 22. Beginners meet from 4 to 5 p.m. while intermediates meet from 5 to 6 p.m. This program is for children ages 8 to 15. The fee is $185/Darien resident; $222/nonresident.
Drumming Lessons: All the basics for the beginner are covered. Learn proper technique, how to read rhythmic notation, and how to play rock beats and fills. Students will rotate between playing drum pads, bongos, snare drum and drum set. Drum sticks and practice pads will be provided for all students. Classes meet each Thursday in the Mather Center starting June 18 through July 23. Beginners meet from 4 to 5 p.m. while intermediates meet from 5 to 6 p.m. This program is for children ages 8 to 15. The fee for is $200/Darien resident; $240/nonresident.
Blue Wave Kickers Soccer Academy: This Academy will be run by Jon Bradley, Head Boys Varsity soccer coach at Darien High School and DSA Coaching Director. The BWK Soccer Academy program offers players the chance to develop their skill sets and gain more experience playing soccer. The sessions will consist of 30 minutes skill training and 30 minutes playing. Boys & girls are divided into separate groups. This program will meet on eight Saturdays from June 27 to August 22 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Darien Town Hall fields. Program fee is $175/Darien resident; $210/nonresident.
Blue Wave Kickers Soccer Camps: Focus of these camps will be on skill improvement. Jon Bradley, head coach of the DHS boys varsity soccer team, will direct these camps for youth ages 3 - 12. Camps will be held at the Darien Town Hall fields the weeks of June 22, July 13, July 27, and August 10 and 24. Camp the week of June 22 is an International Pro Soccer Camp for children ages 5 to 18. Participants of these camps will receive a soccer ball and t-shirt. Check the website for more specific ages, times, and fees.

All Star FC Soccer Camps: These camps for children ages 3 to 12 will be directed by Leigh Parsons, Darien High School's girls soccer coach. They will begin with stations specifically designed to improve all aspects of a soccer player's game and end with scrimmages to practice the skills & techniques they have learned. Camps will be held at the Darien Town Hall fields the weeks June 29, July 20 and August 3. Check the website for more specific ages, times, and fees.
New Level Tennis Camps: Summer tennis camps meet from 9 a.m. to Noon at Darien High School in one-week increments starting June 22 through the week of August 17. The fee for one week of tennis camp is $195/Darien resident; $234/nonresident. These camps are offered for children between the ages of 6 to 15 and participants will be grouped by age and level.
Flag Football Camp: Emphasis of this camp (for ages 6 to 12) is placed on rules, teamwork, and fair play. Games and scrimmages occupy the majority of the camp day. Camp meets from 9 a.m. to noon at Cherry Lawn Park the weeks of June 22 and July 27. The fee for one week of flag football camp is $210/Darien resident; $252/nonresident. This camp is offered by Overtime Athletics and is geared towards beginner football players.
Future Stars Basketball Camp: These camps, for children ages 5 to 12, stress excellence, education, practice, discipline and fun. Camp will meet the week of June 22 and July 20 at the Darien Town Hall. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to noon. The educational "Lessons of Life" program is included in this camp and each participant will receive a Future Stars jersey. The camp fee is $180/Darien resident; $216/nonresident.
Overtime Athletics Sports Camp: This variety sports camp for children ages 5 to 12 includes instruction in the fundamentals of traditional sports as well as incorporating non-traditional sports. Camp meets from 9 a.m. to noon at Darien Town Hall the weeks of August 3 and 17. The fee for this one week of camp is $165/Darien resident; $198/nonresident.
Horsemanship Camps: Mead Farm (Stamford) and Darien Parks and Recreation will be offering group camps for youth ages 4 to 14. Each camp includes riding, horse care, and stable management. This program is designed for riders who did not attend the 2014 Horsemanship Camps at Mead Farm. One-week camps run through mid-August starting the week of June 22, from 8 a.m. to noon for ages 7 -- 14 and from 1 to 4 p.m. for ages 4 to 6. Camp fee is $575/Darien resident; $690/nonresident for ages 7 to 14 and $500/Darien resident; $610/nonresident for ages 4 to 6.
Techstars Technology Camps: TechStars by Computer Explorers are a series of technology classes designed to facilitate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) learning. The educational materials and equipment that is used in the curriculum came from various sources, such as Lego Education, MIT Media Lab and 21st Century Skills. All camps run from 8:45 to 11:45 a.m. Monday through Thursday at the Darien Town Hall. Lego in Motion (ages 5 to 8) will be held the week of July 6, Minecraft Adventure (ages 7 to 10) meets the week of July 13, Lego Robotics (ages 7 to 10) meets the week of July 20, Video Game Design (ages 8 to 12) meets the week of July 27 and Coding in Minecraft (ages 8 to 12) is held the week of August 3. Camp fee is $225/resident; $270/nonresident.
