NEW MILFORD -- Board of Education chairman Wendy Faulenbach thanked town leaders Monday night for pushing for a police officer to be returned to Schaghticoke Middle School and New Milford High School.

Police Chief Shawn Boyne recently assigned Officer Peter DeLouis as the department's school resource officer.

DeLouis, a 22-year veteran who spent seven years as the resource officer at Schaghticoke until that position was lost to budget cuts at the end of 2009-10, will spend three days a week at the high school and two at the middle school.

Until the 2009-10 school year, the town provided full-time officers at the high school, Schaghticoke and Sarah Noble Intermediate. The school board picked up the cost of the Schaghticoke position for half of last year.

At the Town Council meeting, Faulenbach said she is "deeply grateful'' for the return of the one position and hopes the program might be expanded next year.
