Letter: Arts center 'Gets Jazzed' for fundraiser
The Darien Arts Center held its 2014 fundraiser event, Get Jazzed, on Saturday, June 28. The night was a festive jazz cabaret evening with the very talented Jazzical Trio and cabaret singer, Liz Callaway. After a cocktail hour, the entertainment was launched by a videotaped introduction by the event's honorary chairman, Alan Menken, who played the piano and sang some of his memorable Broadway tunes. He welcomed the crowd, paid tribute to our longtime benefactor, Marion Weatherstone, and spoke about the importance of nurturing creativity.
Jazzical band leader Joel A. Martin set the tone with his effervescent personality and lively music and Liz Callaway added the elegance with her beautiful voice. The event, catered by Bash Event Planning, also featured an amazing silent auction which helped raise funds to pay for ongoing visual and performing arts programs and special events for people of all ages in our community.
This year, we were fortunate to have the patronage of many local sponsors and supporters. A special thank you to our generous entertainment sponsors Maureen and Edwin Schloss and our supporting event sponsors: Two Roads Brewery; Christine and Peter Bang; Julie and Scott Johnston; Diane and Leo Schlinkert; Lisa and Peter Thoren; Abbie Van Nostrand; and Kitty and Tom Wynne.
