DANBURY — Ocean State Job Lot will soon fill the space formerly occupied by Toys ‘R Us and Babies ‘R Us on Backus Avenue.

Ocean State Job Lot is a discount closeout retailer that sells a variety of products — from food, home decor and pet supplies to clothing, health essentials and beauty supplies — at discount prices.

The Rhode Island-based company recently purchased the ground lease for the 65,700 square-foot commercial space in the Danbury Square shopping center.

It will be the 29th Ocean State Job Lot location in Connecticut and the first in the western part of the state.

Right now, the closest Ocean State Job Lot is in Mahopac, N.Y. The closest in-state store is in Seymour.

The Danbury store will be 45,000 square-feet, and Ocean State Job Lot is in the process of looking for a second retail tenant to occupy the remaining 20,000 square feet of space.

“Despite a challenging business climate, Ocean State Job Lot is committed to continued expansion and growth throughout the northeast and we are proud to add another store in Connecticut,” said Paul Cox, store operations director for Ocean State Job Lot.

Cox said the company looks forward to “creating new jobs when many are struggling to find work, filling a large vacancy in a popular shopping center, and providing great values and a friendly shopping experience for the Danbury community.”

Danbury’s Toys ‘R Us closed its doors in 2018 after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September 2017.
