With more than 100 sauces and dry rubs (and counting), Dew Drop Inn long ago established itself as a top Connecticut wing destination. Its creative menu is getting attention outside of the Nutmeg State, as the Derby restaurant and bar was just named the best spot in Connecticut for wings by Esquire Magazine. "The sauce options sound insane but are totally worth trying," wrote author Sam Gutierrez. "Notable mentions are cajun taco butter, cucumber wasabi, parm butter bacon, strawberry habanero, suicide (we imagine they're deathly hot?), and s'mores." Gutierrez explained that Esquire identified places on Yelp with a large number of reviews raving about wings, and then ranked those spots using a variety of factors, including total volume and ratings. "It's a testament of the hardest working staff in the business," said Dew Drop owner Jason Carlucci in a text message. "It's an honor to represent the state of CT, especially the city of Derby." Dew Drop Inn's menu organizes its wing flavors into "basic," "not so basic" and "basically ridiculous," with recent additions like candied bacon sriracha, imperial coffee stout, hot cheesy Cheeto, cilantro lime tahini and pink peppercorn lemon curd. There's even a "dessert" category featuring Nutella, s'mores, peanut butter s'mores, Reese's peanut butter cup, Black Forest and Mississippi mud. The honor comes at a difficult time for restaurants that specialize in wings. Carlucci spoke to Hearst Connecticut last month about spiking chicken wing prices and issues with supply, which is affecting restaurants across the country. The problems have not yet resolved, he said Thursday. Dew Drop Inn is at 25 North Ave. in Derby. 203-735-7757, dewdropinnct.com.
