This Thanksgiving, residents can consider supporting Connecticut farmers by purchasing holiday turkeys locally instead of from big-box grocers.

Multiple locally-owned and run farms are beginning to take reservations and deposits for Thanksgiving turkeys. The establishments raise the animals right in Connecticut and prepare them to be the centerpiece for residents' holiday meal. The farms have many variations of high-quality standards, from organic to pasture-raised to antibiotic and non-GMO birds. Most of the farms have begun to book up, and many recommend doing so soon to ensure a fresh bird for Thanksgiving. Here are the places in Connecticut shop local and get a farm-fresh turkey.

Litchfield
Bunnell Farm

Bunnell Farm in Litchfield is offering farm fresh turkeys. According to the farm's site, these locally grown turkeys are tender and moist and their cooking time is less than that of a store-bought turkey.

All of Bunnell's turkeys are fresh, not frozen, unless requested otherwise. The 2021 turkeys were priced at $5.20 per pound, and Bunnell's site said this year's price will be "approximately the same." Specific turkey sizes cannot be guaranteed by the farm due to the "unpredictable nature of farming," but customers can choose approximate sizes from 17 pounds to over 25 pounds.

There will be three pickup dates for the turkeys — Sunday, Nov. 20, Monday, Nov. 21 and Tuesday, Nov. 22. Turkeys can be order from the form listed here.
