Rain postpones Sinoway-Darien Section 1 Little League final
TRUMBULL — Excessive heat and humidity couldn’t stop the 2019 Section 1 Connecticut Little League baseball tournament.
Torrential rain, however, is another story.
Monday’s expected rainstorms arrived on cue, forcing the postponement of the Section 1 final between District 4 champ Max Sinoway (North Haven) and District 1 champ Darien at Unity Park.
So Sinoway (2-0) will battle Darien (1-1) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Unity Park’s Diamond No. 1 for the 2019 Section 1 title and a berth in the Connecticut State Little League tournament.
The Connecticut state tournament, which will host the four Section champs from across the state, starts Saturday, July 27 in Willimantic.
Having a day off was a good outcome for both teams after battling through the sweltering temperatures of last weekend.
However, Monday’s postponement helps Darien more in the big picture.
The extra day before the final means that Darien closer Aidan Elders will now be available to pitch against Sinoway.
Elders had thrown 33 pitches to get the final seven outs in Darien’s 7-4 elimination game victory last Sunday over District 2 champ Fairfield American. Throwing more than 20 pitches mandates a day off before a hurler can return to the mound.
With Monday’s rainout, Elders gets his mandated rest day. The righthander has been a force at the end of Darien wins in both the District 1 and Section 1 tournaments.
Merritt Hole, Darien’s starter last Sunday against Fairfield American, remains unavailable after throwing 66 pitches. However, all other Darien hurlers will be all hands on deck Tuesday, weather permitting.
