Weston captures ninth straight Class S girls swim championship

Weston, which had just one individual and one relay victory, has finished either as the champion or runner-up every season since 2009. The Trojans have won the division 20 times in program history.

Weston is also the second SWC team to win a state title in as many days, with Pomperaug crowned in Class M on Monday.

Woodland was this year’s Class S runner-up with 492, with Daniel Hand third at 418.5. A cluster of teams followed in the next three spots as Lauralton Hall (382), Seymour (353) and Sheehan (350.5) were separated by fewer than 32 points.

Emilia Baker, a junior, gave Weston its only individual win , taking first place in the 100 backstroke (58.80). She joined Adele Kopnis, Zofia Chmiel and Olivia Huewe to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:40.48).

Seymour won five races, led by senior Sophia Velleco in the 200 freestyle (1:53.08) and 500 freestyle (5:05.82). Senior Katrine O’Leary was first in the 100 freestyle (52.68).

Both Velleco and O’Leary were part of the Wildcats’ winning 200 medley (1:50.00) and 200 freestyle (1:40.29) relays.

Bacon Academy freshman Riley Anderson was a double-winner in the 50 freestyle (23.30) and 100 butterfly (56.41); Woodland junior Emme Starzman won the 200 IM (2:11.06); and sophomore Samantha Chemacki won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.42).
